Prison Island, better known as Changuu, is an uninhabited island just off the coast of Stone Town. The name Prison Island comes from the first plans to build a prison in the 1860s, but the island was actually used as a place that served as a quarantine station for people with malaria or other diseases.

Today, Prison Island is best known for its oldest residents, the Aldabra tortoises. The Aldabra tortoises that live on the island are the second largest tortoises in the world.
